The short version: your photos stay on your phone, and nothing we count says who you are.

The app

Pocket Cameraman is a camera app that guides you into a pose and takes the photo for you. It is made so that it does not need to know anything about you.

• No account. There is no sign-up, no login and no profile.
• No ads and no tracking. The app contains no advertising, no advertising id and nothing that follows you to other apps or websites.
• Your photos never leave your phone. They are not uploaded, not looked at and not used for anything.
• It works offline. Everything the app does for you happens on your phone. With flight mode switched on, it still works.

Two things do go over the internet, and only those two: a count of how the app is used, and a donation if you choose to give one. Both are below.

Your photos

The photos you take are kept inside the app, on your phone. They go to your phone’s photo library only when you tap “Save to phone”. We never upload them, and we could not: there is nowhere to upload them to.

Deleting a photo or a photoshoot in the app removes it from the app for good. Photos you have saved to your phone stay in your photo library until you delete them there. Removing the app removes everything the app kept.

Your phone may copy photos as part of its own backup or gallery sync, for example iCloud or Google Photos. That follows the settings of your phone, not of this app.

How the app sees your pose

To guide you, the app has to see where your head, shoulders, elbows, hands, hips, knees and feet are. A small pose-detection model finds those points on your phone, in the camera picture, while you stand in front of it. It does not recognise who you are. The picture is not stored for this and not sent anywhere. The model reads the picture; it never changes your photo.

What the app counts

To learn whether the app actually works for people, it counts what happens in it: a session starting, a tab opened, a pose looked at, a photoshoot started and how far it got, a photo taken, saved or exported, a setting changed, a tip opened, a link followed, and whether a donation was offered and given. Those counts go to our own server at pocketcameraman.com, in batches, and the server keeps no IP addresses.

Along with them go the version of the app, whether it is the iPhone or Android version, the version of the operating system, and the language the app is in.

There is no name, no email address, no account and no advertising id in any of it. An install is a random number made on your phone the first time you open the app, which lets us tell one phone apart from another without knowing whose it is; removing the app throws it away for good. The counts are never sold, never shared with other companies and never used to advertise to you.

What the app never sends: your photos, the camera picture, where your body is in it, or anything you typed.

Buying me a beer

The app is free and stays free. If you want to give something anyway, you can, through the App Store or Google Play. That payment runs entirely through Apple or Google: they take the money, and this app never sees your card, your address or your name. We are only told that a donation succeeded, and for how much, which is counted like everything above.

Apple and Google keep their own records of what you bought, under their own privacy policies.

Permissions

• Camera, to guide your pose and take your photos.
• Adding photos to your library, asked when you tap “Save to phone”. This lets the app add a photo. It does not let the app look through your library.

The app does not ask for your microphone, your location or your contacts.

Links out of the app

One of the photo tips links to a web shop where you can look at phone holders. It opens in your browser only when you tap it, and from there that shop’s own privacy policy applies. It is a plain link today. If it ever becomes an affiliate link, this page and the app will say so.

This website

This website sets no cookies, runs no analytics and loads nothing from other companies: fonts, pictures and scripts all come from this one domain. It is hosted on Microsoft Azure, which keeps standard server logs, such as IP address, time and the page asked for, to run and protect the service. We do not look into those logs to follow visitors.

If you email us, we use your address to answer you. If you ask to hear when the app is out, we send you that one email and then delete your address.

Children

The app is not aimed at children. It asks nobody for their age, their name or their address, so it does not knowingly collect anything about a child either.

Changes

If the app ever starts to handle data differently, this page changes first, and the date at the top with it.
